This the comic novel, told in epistolary fashion as a sequence of exchanged letters, presents pornographer “Guy LaDouche” retreating to the wilderness with the hope of solitude and concentration to write his next book under a looming deadline.

Instead of peace, he finds harassment and distraction from his publisher, his old girlfriend and an angry father convinced that LaDouche's last novel, featuring a genuine nymphomaniac, was based on the man’s daughter. Soon, the author finds his quiet getaway plan beset by a lawsuit and investigation by the FBI and local sheriff.

Clever, sarcastic and, at times, over-the-top absurd, The Man Who Wrote Dirty Books has been delighting readers since its first publication in 1964.

Definitely not laugh out loud. Confusing to read and not worth spending much time on. In letter form. Some are amusing. There are too many good books to read to waste time on this.

The Man Who Wrote Dirty Books edition by Hal Dresner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

While getting rid of some old books, I found the 1965 hardback of "The Man Who Wrote Dirty Books." I don't remember ever seeing it before, despite is has an unusual cover of brown wrapping paper and only the words in black across the front,"This is a Plain Brown Wrapper." My first thought was anyone who has to resort to such a silly gimmick must not be a good writer. Then I looked inside and saw it was a fake collection of unfunny letters from unknown people. I am a fan of humor writing, but this is not humor. I then looked online to see if the book is shown for sale I was surprised to see it has been reprinted. I do not know why!
I bought this book first at the Army and Navy s London in 1964. At that time it was titled "This is a brown paper cover to protect THE MAN WHO WROTE DIRTY BOOKS." and was indeed covered in that material. Over the years and through many moves I lost it and just yesterday I thought "Maybe it's on ?" and there it was. I finished it the same day and it's still a great read. And if anyone is in doubt, there's not a single sex scene in it. I still wonder whatever happened to Guy LaDouche?
Full disclosure Hal Dresner has been a close friend for half a century. So? This is a brilliant, sparkling novel, no less poignant and incisive for the passage of time, and still hysterically funny after all these years.

When Hal and I met, we were both writing erotic novels for Harry Shorten and Bill Hamling, and Hal was the first of us to transform that experience into fiction. (Don Westlake's turn in the barrel was "Adios, Scheherezade," also a star turn. My own attempt never found a publisher, and the manuscript has since vanished. Which, now that I think about it, is probably just as well.)

The Man Who Wrote Dirty Books was originally published by Simon & Schuster. Peter Schwed was Hal's editor at S & S, and took his young author around the firm's offices, introducing him to various folk. One was M. Lincoln Schuster, one of the founding partners, now in his dotage but still given an office which he visited a couple of times a week. Schwed brought Hal in to present him to this legend of the publishing world. "One of our new authors...very proud to be publishing his first novel..."

Max Schuster looked off into the middle distance. "Writers," he cackled. "They keep writing books! They never learn!"
Of all the books I have ever read this is the best d__n futting book ever. I have read this about 15 times.
Very funny book with an entertaining story and an interesting format. Recommended.
Paper. ...that said THIS IS A PLAIN BROWN. WRAPPER... I READ IT NOW EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS ... AGAIN IT IS THE FUNNIEST THING I HAVE EVER READ.. AND SO Very Clever...
This is a tremendously funny book. I didn't care for the first few letters, but then the author swept me along. It's actually about friendship. One of the last letters from the narrator's lawyer-friend is just beautiful and a wonderful testament to friendship and faith in another.
Definitely not laugh out loud. Confusing to read and not worth spending much time on. In letter form. Some are amusing. There are too many good books to read to waste time on this.
